Classic Portraits HD – Final Fantasy VIII Remastered
Classic Portraits HD for FF8 Remastered
Classic Portraits HD was created for players who miss the original look of Final Fantasy VIIIs character portraits and never fully connected with the more cartoon-like style of the Remastered version. As the name suggests, the purpose of this mod is to bring back the classic portraits with a cleaner and sharper presentation for modern screens, while staying faithful to their original identity.
The process began with an AI upscale made directly from the original PS1 portraits, followed by more than 10 hours of manual editing to refine the results, correct imperfections, and carefully preserve the look that so many players remember.
There is also a behind-the-scenes video included in the post showing part of this work in 4x speed, so you can see more closely how the restoration process was done and how much manual care went into the final result.
Classic Portraits HD’s Gallery
Here in this gallery, you will find the assets from the Classic Portraits HD mod in three different comparisons:
1 – Vanilla Upscaled x Classic Portraits HD
2 – AI Upscaled x Classic Portraits HD
3 – Remastered Portraits x Classic Portraits HD
In the first comparison, you will find the assets compared to the original portraits with only a simple resize applied. In the second, you will find the assets compared to the originals upscaled by AI, without any manual editing. And in the third, you will find a direct comparison between Classic Portraits HD and the original portraits from the Remastered version.
Classic Portraits Mod – Video Gallery
In this video, Im showing part of the final manual polishing stage behind my Classic Portraits mod for Final Fantasy VIII Remastered. The portraits were AI-upscaled from the original/vanilla (classic) portraits, and then refined by hand in CorelDRAW removing noise, cleaning artifacts, and correcting small details to better preserve the classic art style.
This project had 10+ hours of recorded editing. For this upload, I turned it into a 4x timelapse and removed idle sections, interruptions, and a few recording issues (including moments where Corel crashed/closed), so it stays focused on the real editing work.
How to download Classic Portraits HD

It also gives easy access to other important graphical improvements, and there is a complete tutorial here on the site showing how to configure everything step by step.
If the original portraits were always part of how you remember Final Fantasy VIII, I hope this mod helps bring that feeling back in the best possible way. May Classic Portraits HD bring back a familiar feeling and make your return to this world even more nostalgic and memorable.
